Three kinds of work make up almost everything that comes through the Savannah filling room.

Bulk liquid to drums and IBCs

Tank wagons and ISO tanks arrive from the port or the highway and are unloaded into drums, IBCs and pails on calibrated filling equipment. Operators check fill weights against the target and log them to the lot.

Imported chemicals often land in Savannah in bulk and need to leave in packaged form for domestic customers. Doing the fill seven miles from Garden City Terminal cuts the drayage and the number of times the material is handled.

Solids: bags and supersacks

Hopper trucks and supersacks get broken down into bags, and non-branded bags get rebagged into customer-branded ones. Resins, polymers, powders and granular industrial materials are the usual products.

One resins and monomers customer consolidated its Baltimore, Charleston and Mobile port operations into Savannah. Porter engineered a line for that program that processes over 3,000 25 kg bags a day.

Transfers, storage and shipping

Packaging-to-packaging transfers are common: IBC to drum, drum to pail, supersack to small bags. The same crew and the same records handle them.

After repack, product stays in the building. The Savannah warehouse has racked and bulk floor space, ships hundreds of LTL, truckload and parcel orders a day, and is a CBP-approved bonded warehouse for imports that have not cleared.

The Pooler building is Porter Logistics' Savannah warehouse. It is registered with US DOT as a hazmat handler and with the EPA, and is audited by the Alliance for Chemical Distribution every other year under its Responsible Distribution program.

It is also a food-grade building, audited by AIB, SQF and the FDA, USDA Organic certified and bonded with Customs. That combination lets customers with mixed portfolios, say a chemical line and a food ingredient line, keep both with one provider. Porter has chemical engineers on staff to design the handling plan for a new material.

How a chemical repack program starts

New materials get an engineering review before anything is quoted. After that, the steps are the same as any warehouse program.

Material, hazard class, inbound format (ISO tank, tanker, hopper, supersack), target package, volumes and whether product ships out of Savannah or stays in storage.

The facility is in Pooler's industrial corridor, a short drive to I-95 and I-16 and about seven miles from Garden City Terminal. Tankers and containers coming off the port reach the yard without crossing downtown Savannah.

Drivers: the street address and check-in instructions come with the appointment confirmation. The yard holds 50 or more trailers, so staged ISO tanks and loaded containers can wait for a filling slot on site.

It depends on the material, the inbound format, the target container and the volume. Filling drums from an ISO tank is priced differently from rebagging resin. Send the SDS and the spec and we will quote per container or per unit, with storage and outbound rates alongside. The quote is free.
Industrial chemicals, resins and monomers, polymers, consumer product ingredients and other regulated materials, hazardous and non-hazardous. Flammables and combustibles go in the flame room. Our engineers review every new SDS before we accept the material.
